THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF STRESSES AND STRAINS IN A GLASS-REINFORCED PLASTIC WINDSHIELD

Abstract

Object: 1. To determine, by rupture tests, the maximum initial departure from circularity permissible at the mouth of the XM-28 practice windshield to ensure that excessive stress is not developed when it is fitted over a circular mating part. 2. To estimate, through the use of SR-4 strain gages, the stress levels at the windshield mouth when it is deformed in a manner similar to that of the fitting operation. 3. To compare the maximum allowable departures from circularity predicted by the two test methods and by a structural analysis. (Author-PL).
