A STUDY OF FUNDAMENTAL MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CERAMIC SINGLE CRYSTALS

Abstract

Mechanical properties of vapor phase grown single crystals of silicon carbide were determined. Preliminary results for elastic properties and crossbending strength are reported. Values of strength were obtained in excess of one million psi. The effect on strength of various methods of specimen preparation was investigated. Considerable scatter is obtained for elastic properties due to specimen non-uniformity. Observations were also made on the type of fracture which is obtained. Some etchpit studies were also initiated. (Author)
