MANUAL FOR SCREENING SMALL SCALE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Abstract
This manual is designed as an aid to rapid identification and analysis of military targets on low image-quality, non-stereoscopic, aerial photography obtained from very high altitudes. Methods are presented for screening of photography and analysis of significant targets at the low image quality represented by 100-foot ground resolution, and an evaluation is given of the interpretability of selected targets at increments of better image quality up to 20-foot ground resolution. The manual consists of four parts: Part I provides an introduction to problems involved in interpretation of 100-foot ground resolution photography. Included is a brief discussion of the meaning of 100-foot ground resolution; definitions of terms and techniques; a guide to effective photo scanning, and an explanation of a method of target categorization designed to facilitate rapid extraction of intelligence from this photography. Part II covers the identification clues and the scope of analysis possible for each of nine target categories at 100-foot ground resolution. Part III contains selected examples of 100-foot ground resolution photography from which extraction of maximum information is illustrated in step-by-step interpretation procedures. Part IV describes the interpretability of photography at improved ground resolutions up to and including 20 feet for two selected targets, airfields and petroleum installations.
