DIVERGENCE CONDITIONS AND THE GRAVITATIONAL FIELD EQUATIONS

Abstract

IT IS SHOWN THAT IN ADDITION TO THE FOUR DIVERGENCE LAWS T = 0, stress tensors satisfying the Einstein field equation must also satisfy the six additional divergence conditions (T - T ) = 0. Conversely under quite general assumptions these ten conditions on T dictate the metric-matter connection proposed by Einstein. In the spirit of Rainich theory the entire content of the gravitational field equations is expressed in terms of conditions on the stress tensor. (Author)
