CRYSTAL GROWTH OF FLUOALUMINATES

Abstract

Metho s of growing fluoaluminate sheet crystals and the formation of fluoaluminate films ere investigated. The various processes studied included the Bridgman m thod, the Chalmers method, the Czochralski method, spraying molten KAlF4, vapor deposition of KAlF4, and a hot wire technique. Attempts to form reconstituted KAlF4 sheet were unsuccessful. The most promising process was the Czochralski crystallization ethod. For success, very precise control of the process variables, such as pulling rate, seed crystal temperature, cooling rate and melt te pera ure is ce sary. The Bridgman method did not show promise in this study because of unexpected difficult cleavability of the crystal masses obtained.
