REMARKS ON THE QUANTUM MECHANICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE STARK EFFECT IN THE HYDROGEN ATOM

Abstract

Identifer : Stark effec . It is known that when applying perturbation theory in the quantum mechanical treatment of the Stark effect, the perturbation expansion diverges even for very weak fields. It is shown that a plausible modification of the boundary conditions makes the power series convergent at least for those states which areASSOCIATED WITH THE PRINCIPAL QUANTUM NUMBERS N = 1, 2, 3, 4 FOR UP TO ABOUT 10 TO THE 5TH POWER VOLT/CM FIELD STRENGTH. In case of the ground state (n = 1) the radius of convergence obtained will be at least 2.5 (10 to the 6th power volt/cm). (Author)
