MAGNETIC EFFECTS OF GEOMAGNETICALLY TRAPPED PARTICLES

Abstract

Analysis and calculations of the fields at the surface of the earth due to narrow belts of trapped particles provide a basis for discussing some magnetic effects of geomagnetically trapped particles. The assumption that the particles are trapped in a centered dipole field guarantees the symmetry of magnetic sources about the geomagnetic equatorial plane as well as about the geomagnetic axis, and therefore the same symmetries obtain for the magnetic field at the surface of the earth due to the motion of the particles. Hence, only the field along an arbitrary meridian in one hemisphere is considered. The symmetries of the magnetic source are exactly those of sets of coaxial Helmholtz coils. (Author)
