GENERATION AND SUPPRESSION OF SPURIOUS OUTPUTS IN KLYSTRON AMPLIFIERS

Abstract

Spurious energy and distortion that can be generated by a klystron transmitter are discussed. Particular attention is devoted to harmonic generation, mutual intermodulation between two transmitters, and long-line distortion in FM transmitters. A method for designing a broad-band output circuit for klystrons was developed and a model was fabricated and tested. A theory is developed for the power radiated because of mutual intermodulation. Measured results are reported on the mutual intermodulation radiated power which agree satisfactorily with the theory. The degree of coupling of the load to the output cavity is discussed, as a means for controlling the value of a-c outputgap voltage. A plot of efficiency versus degree of coupling is shown superimposed on the gap current versus gap voltage curve. Some pertinent aspects of FM long-line distortion are appended. (Author)
