GRAVES REGISTRATION OPERATIONS UNDER CONCEPTS OF FUTURE WARFARE

Abstract

Objectives and Scope. To develop policies and guidelines for organization, procedures, and materiel., with regard to recovery, Identification, evacuation, and burial of deceased troops under concepts of future warfare in the army in the field in the 1966-1971 period. The study willconsider implication of mass casualties, effects of contamination (from nuclear explosions, CBR Warfare, and other causes), handling of personal effects, reporting procedures, and return of remains program. The study presents a concept for graves registration operationsin support of future warfare with the emphasis placed upon the handling of remains from the forward area of the combat zone to the field army cemetery. For limited warfare, the study finds that the present system of graves registration support is basically sound and suitable and requires only minor changes. However, general warfare employing mass destructive weapons will require substantially increased GRS support. To meet this situation, the study points out changes which will be necessary in military policy, doctrine, organization and training. The study also identifies appropriate requirements for research and materiel development.
