TRAVELLING WAVES ON TORPEDO-LIKE BODIES.

Abstract

This study of travelling waves on prolate spheroids concentrated on strict application to torpedo shaped bodies. A previous study in which flexural waves, imposed on the axis of the torpedo, was conducted. This study was supplemented with a similar calculation for waves on the skin of the torpedo. The report contains all the design formulas necessary for skin drag reduction (or skin propulsion) applications to torpedoes. Further consideration of the vortex wake was attempted. It was found, however, that the vortices are formed along the body of the fish in a very complicated manner and no satisfactory basis for an analytical treatment was found. (Author)
