PILOT CALCULATION OF THE FLUX OF ANGULAR MOMENTUM IN A SPIRAL GALAXY.

Abstract

The radial flow of angular mementum due to the action of purely gravitational torques is estimated for the galaxy M51. The method is based upon some prior work and involves the use of a cartesian finite difference grid-work with the aid of an estimate of the actual mass distribution from photographic evidence. The numerical integration indicates the presence of a marked outward flow of angular momentum which would by itself be of prime importance for the mechanics of the galaxy. (Author)
