EXPERIMENTAL X-BAND MASER RECEIVING COMPLEX.

Abstract

An experimental X-band maser receiver complex is described; it requires the design and construction of a low noise receiving system for use in Project Leapfrog. This receiving system is for the reception of communications signals reflected from a belt of orbiting dipoles. The receiving system will consist of a 13.5 foot diameter parabolic reflector mounted on an SCR-584 radar pedestal. A Cassegrainian feed system will reflect the captured energy into a horn antenna near the vertex of the parabolic reflector. The horn antenna will be rotatable for changing polarization of the received signal. A twin cavity maser preamplifier will be used to amplify the received signal by approximately 20 db. The maser output then is passed through a dual frequency wave-guide filter to eliminate spurious responses and then is amplified further by a tunnel diode r-f amplifier. (Author)
