VARACTOR MICROWAVE FREQUENCY MULTIPLIERS,

Abstract

The construction of varactor harmonic generators is often a time-consuming project because of certain problems that are characteristic of circuits employing reactive nonlinearity. This report describes some of the problems, giving methods to avoid them or render them harmless by simplified design procedures and laboratory techniques. The procedures and simplified design techniques described are considered feasible for eliminating and/or minimizing the problems that are inherently characteristic in circuits employing reactive nonlinearity. These procedures, are based on the simplified and experimental methods adapted for: (1) approximately calculating the diode impedance; (2) determining whether fundamental power is delivered to the varactor; and (3) directly determining the optimum bias voltage on the varactor for any tuning condition.
