Synthesis of Elastomers Containing Si-N Bonds in the Main Chain.

Abstract

Synthesis of thermally and hydrolytically stable elastomers based on chains containing Si atoms bonded directly to N was concerned with preparation of alternately ordered Si and N atoms in the main chain. Cyclization was avioded by bridging N atoms along the chain with alkylene groups which act as templates to prevent formation of small rings. Studies of polymerization variables failed to reveal methods of preparing materials with molecular weights greater than 7,500 to 15,000. A series of monomers and intermediates was prepared. Polymerization was effected by heating the monomer in the presence of ammonium sulfate. The linear manner of polymerization was established on the basis of experimental data including analyses for elements, molecular wt and IR spectra. Although the polymers were low melting, some were rubbery at room temperature.
