PHOTOEMISSION STUDIES

Abstract

A modified version of the ion gun used to deposit Na is described. A brief description of the experimental tube used to check this ion gun is given, and preliminary results of the experiment to determine the dependence of the work function of Ge on Na coverage are given. An electron diffraction tube, constructed for studying the structure of adsorbed sodium on germanium is described. Secondary electron measurements can be made in the same tube. Construction of a field-emission microscope, also for the study of Ge:Na, is discussed. Progress in the obtaining of drybox and argon purification facilities for the synthesis of Na3Sb is reported as are design changes in the tube for Na3Sb film studies. A brief description is also given of a vacuum system to be used in the study of photovoltaic effects in evaporated semiconducting films. (Author)
