DIVISION 7. ENGINEERING

Abstract

All parts of the Haystack antenna system, with the exception of the reflector panels, were fabricated. The 120-foot reflector is being assembled in a face-up position on simulated elevation axis bearings. The Millstone Hill 84-foot parabolic reflector was preassembled and tolerances were checked. X-band dipole dispensers weighing 350 pounds and carrying 110 pounds of dipoles are being designed. A package is 44 inches in diameter, 6 inches long, with a 0.7-inch thick shell containing 180 blocks of dipoles. The mechanism will be ejected from a rocket with a rifle mechanism at an axial speed of one foot per second and a peripheral speed of 10 fps. Stabilized airborne platforms and servo linkages to groundbased radars are being designed. The location of the optical equipment on the KC-135 aircraft was determined on layout drawings. (Author)
