SYNTHESIS OF REGULATED STRUCTURE POLYPHENYLETHER-SILOXANE ELASTOMERS
Abstract
Copolymers of siloxanes with phenyl ether blocks were prepared u ing an alcoholysis reaction and by direct con ensation of a dihydroxy phenylether derivative with dichlorosilanes. These copolymers were cro slinked to give materials exhibiting elasticity in the temperature range 75 to 400 C. The alkaline hydrolysis reaction which had resulted in a 47% yield of 4,4'-dihydroxy diphenylether resulted in a 15% yield when scaled to a 20 gallon reactor. Methoxy substituted diphenyl ether is the main product. An attempt to convert the methoxy ubstituted groups to hydroxyl groups by treatment with anhydrous alu inum chloride was unsuccessful. Attempts to replace methanol as a cosolvent in the alkaline hydrolysis r action with an inert cosolvent as well as other methods of synthesis are as yet unsuccessful. Attempts to synthesize methylvinyldiethoxysilane in preparation for the alcoholysis condensation polymerization of regulated polyphenylethersiloxanes were partially successful. (Author)
