EFFECTS OF NUCLEAR RADIATION ON QUARTZ CRYSTAL UNITS

Abstract

Crystal units were irradiated in a cyclotron for one minute to an integrated neutron flux 1.8 times 10 to the 13th nvt. The frequency of the crystal units during the irradiation did not change. The CR-18/U, 4 mc, crystal units exhibited the largest frequency change of all of the units irradiated to 10 to the 8th R gamma dose. The electron caused the greatest transient change in phase angle; the CR-18/U, 17 mc, crystal units being the most affected. Details of the transient nuclear effects are discussed for each type crystal unit completed thus far, together with a graphical presentation of the data. The Neutron irradiation data for the Y-bar synthetic crystals are also presented. These crystals were essentially unaffected by this irradiation. (Author)
