PILOT PRODUCTION AND EVALUATION OF TANTALUM ALLOY SHEET

Abstract

The primary purpose of this program is to conduct detailed studies of the properties and processing of Ta rich alloys in the Ta-W-Hf system. An initial portion of the program will consist of establishing base line properties on the Ta-8W-2Hf alloy. Physical and mechanical properties will be evaluated on the basis of: (1) Tensile properties (-452 to 3500F); (2) Stress rupture properties (1 to 10 hrs at 2400 and 3000F); (3) Recrystallization; (4) Thermal expansio ; (5) Hot hardness; (6) Weldability. Melting and processing of 3-inch diameter alloy ingots to sheet is described in detail. Preliminary elevated and low temperature mechanical properties are given.
