ON THE STABILITY OF CERTAIN FINITE DIFFERENCE APPROXIMATIONS TO PARABOLIC SYSTEMS OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

Abstract

Certain simple explicit finite difference approximations to the solution of the initial value problem are considered for a uniformly parabolic system of linear differential equations with variable coefficients. The problem is to determine conditions which will guarantee that the approximating difference problem is well-posed. Since explicit difference equations involving a finite number of lattice points are used, the existence of a unique solution of the difference problem is trivial. Primarily, the concern is with the dependence of the solution of the difference problem on its data. (Author)
