PHOTOPRODUCTION OF 42.4 MEV POSITIVE PIONS FROM HYDROGEN A LABOR ORY ANGLES BET EEN 50 AND 170 DEGREES, by Paul M. Baum and Clark S. Robinson. July 62, 171p. incl. illus. tables, 53 refs (Tech ical rept. no. 40) (Contract No r-183405) Unclassified report DESCRIPTORS: *Photonuclear reactions, *Pions, *Differ nti l cros ectio *Hydrogen. Relative differential cross sections for the photoproduction of 42.4 Mev pi(+) mesons from hydrogen were measured at 12 laboratory angles bet een 50 and 170 deg. The experimental cross sections obtained were compared with the predictions of th ispersion theory of Chew, Goldberger, Low, and Nambu (CGLN). It is found that an appreciable discrepancy exists. W HEN THE EXPERIMENTAL RESUL ARE NORMALIZED TO THE THEORETICAL CROSS SECTION AT THE SMALLEST ANGLE, THE THEORETICAL VALUES AT LARGE ANGLES ARE ABOUT <*% higher than the experimental values. Comparison with theoretical results of cKinl y shows t at t data can be fitted quite well by using a rho-meson coupling constant lambda/ef = -1.2 ! 0.4. The uncertainty in lambda is due to the uncertainty in the phase ifts app ring in the photoproduction amplitude. (Author)
