Quarterly Technical Progress Report Numbe 1, 1 April-15 July 1962.
Abstract
Several problems were encou tered and corrected in the mechanical assembly of the 1 kw generator. Capacitance measurements were made on the generator, and the power stage values found to be clos to the design values, although the floating rotor exciter stage capacitances are rather disappointing. The rotor/stator capacitance values have been checked for stability at generator speeds up to 6,000 rpm. Vacuum flashover checks on the generator insulation showed the stator insulation as designed carries the re uired voltag atisfactorily, but the rotor insulation re uires improvement. The preliminary design of the 5 kw ge r or indicates that a traddle-supported rotor with a diameter of approximately 15 inches would make it just possible to generate 5 kw with a single rotor disc with a field of 80 kv/mm. V CUUM IN ULATION STUDIES INCLUDED THE PRELIMINARY STAGES OF A PROGRAM TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF DIELECTRIC COATINGS ON VACUUM BREAKDOWN. A fi ld of 5 kv/mm has been supported with small area (15 sq cm) titanium electrodes. The first spinning cathode indirectly heated by a stationary heater has operated successfully. (Author)
