RESEARCH ON ANNULAR NOZZLE TYPE GROUND EFFECT MACHINE OVER WATER

Abstract

It was desired to determine the characteristics of a ground effect machine (GEM) of the annular nozzle type operating over water in the presence of waves. As the primary forces to be considered were inertia and gravity, a Froude number was used in constructing and testing the model. The characteristics of a GEM moving over waves was studied using a rigidly mounted model which was dynamically similar to the 300-ft diameter, 5,000,000 lb gross weight prototype. To obtain information on the forces acting on the model, measurements of lift and bending moment in the direction of GEM advance were made, together with the pressure field over the base plate. Measurements of drag were not made because the ''wind drag'' on the appendages were so large that they masked the true drag.
