A KINEMATIC TREATMENT OF THE APPROACH TO EQUILIBRIUM IN A PLASMA

Abstract

A set of kinematic equations are obtained from the Pines- chrieffer formul tio to de cribe the approach to equilibrium of electrons and collective oscillations in a pla ma. The kinematic equations contain the conservation laws which the Pine -Schrieffer formulation satisfies. The ki ema ic formulation is appli d to an a aly sis of he ime-dependent behavior of a plasma which is unstable against a growing plasma wave. A close comparison is made with the analysis carried out by Drummond a d Pines for a similar situation; the equivalence of the two treatments in a numb r of fundamental predictions is established. The role played by th spontaneous emission of plasma waves is also discussed. (Author)
