INVESTIGATION AND SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS OF HAWK WARHEADS XM5E3

Abstract

Investigations and tests were conducted for the following purposes: (a) determine certain strength characteristics of two raw materials as compared to the material presently used for Hawk Warhead Bodies. Emphasis was placed on the strength of the lugs since some cracking of lugs had been reported; (b) evaluate a redesign in the method of securing the mounting inserts to the warhead body; (c) provide a means for eliminating the accumulation of water from the safety and arming device cavity, which contributed to a loosening of discs covering explosive-train elements.
