CERENKOV RADIATION IN A PLASMA

Abstract

I IFI R : C RGED P RTICLES.A particle which traverses a low-density plasma, pervaded by a magnetic field, with a velocity considerably below the velocity of light in free space may emit C renkov radiation. A critic l veloci y, below which negligible Cer kov radiation is emitted, wa determined by u ing the Appleton-Hartree Theory. For a non-relativistic particle moving faster than this critical speed, the intensity of emitted radiation is estimated. It is found that a particle of unit elec ron charg tr versing the ionosp eric F lay r with a veloci y a ord r of magnitud below he velocity of light in free space will emit about 0.1 ev/sec.
