Contour Packaging of Field Clothing Items

Abstract

The concept of contour packaging is being studied as a possible means of providing an economical method of compression packaging of clothing and textile items without sacrificing unit quantity flexibility needed for today's mobile army. Ten barrier materials, including four unsupported materials, and six laminated materials were included. Heat-shrinkable polyethylene provided better protection against usage from rough handling than the other materials but its high gas transmission rate makes it unsatisfactory for contour packaging. The best over-all performance was obtained from materials containing a cloth backing as the outer ply of the lamination.
