INFLUENCE OF THE ALKALI METAL CATIONS ON THE REDUCTION OF IODATE ION ON MERCURY IN ALKALINE SOLUTION

Abstract

Abnormal overvoltages were found in the course of this work for the reduction of iodate on mercury in alkaline solution in presence of Li(+). These results are described and interpreted. It is suggested that addition of Li(+) to IO3(-) affects in some way the hydration shell of that ion and renders reduction easier. The strong hydration of Li(+) ion and probably IO3(-) seems to support his view. Less strongly hydrated ions do not exhibit this abnormal behavior. (Author)
