A SURVEY OF HIGH SPEED DATA COMMUNICATIONS

Abstract

The r sults of a preliminary investigation of t e techniques available for high speed transmission of large volumes of digital data are given. Developmental techniques which the manufacturers or common carriers have developed to th firm planning stage are also considered. To avoid tabulating the nearly endless system configurations resulting from the permutations of techniques and variations in requirements, a specific exa ple of a typical data transmission problem is considered. The example assumed a message of 277,220 computer words to be transmitted a distance of 1300 miles twice daily, with 20 minutes allowed for each transmission. The factors of cost, transmission ti e, and error control are considered for several techniques to provide sufficient clarification of what may be achieved, and at what cost. (Author)
