POLYNOMIAL FITTING TO DISCRETE DATA BY DIFFERENCE METHODS

Abstract

ONE CHOICE OF WEIGHTS APPLIED TO ORDINARY DIFFERENCES LEADS TO EQUALLY WEIGHTED LEAST SQUARES POLYNOMIAL FITS TO EQUALLY SPACED DATA. Such a difference method is generalized so that the approximation can be expressed in terms of polynomials chosen by the user in the fitting of discrete data, arbitrarily spaced, and with arbitrary variances and correlations of observation errors.
