DIPOLE MOMENT INDUCTION IN HOMONUCLEAR DIATOMIC MOLECULES

Abstract

Earlier work on the induction of electric dipole moments in homonuclear diatomic molecules is first reviewed. Following this the scheme developed for treating moment induction by short range forces is detailed. It is applied both to the oxygen and nitrogen cases where the field producer is assumed to generate an undistorted Coulomb field. Finally the effect of polarization and exchange is briefly considered, and it is shown that the inclusion of the former leads to the proper form for the potential. (Author)
