SHEARING RESISTANCE OF SANDS DURING RAPID LOADINGS

Abstract

New experimental and theoretical results concerning the behavior of saturated sands when sheared very rapidly are presented. Included are: (1) a review of previously-existing data regarding strain-rate effects in dry sands, (2) an analysis of the errors and uncertai ties which can dev lop when testing ry and saturated sands in rapid triaxial compression, (3) new data concerning a saturated, coarse sand, nd (4) a discussion of the possible implications of the sum o al of the new an old dat .
