THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF BI-METALLIC POWDERS

Abstract

A dual approach is used in the determinatio of the heats of formation of aluminum-lithium and aluminum-boron bi-metallic alloys. The heats of formation of t e oxide resulting from t combustion of the alloys and the individual constitue ts of the alloys are al o sough . The experimental techniques involved are oxyg n bomb calorimetry and solution calorimetry. The two experimental apparatus to be employed for the study were calibrate . The heat of formation of alpha-alumina by the direct combustion of ultrafine aluminum powder was quantitatively measur d. Successful combustions of lithium an aluminumlithium alloy were accomplished. Because of undesirable low ctive metal analyses in these two systems, results of the combustions were not used in the thermodynamic calculations; however, they were qualitatively useful in providing operational data. Reruns of the material preparation were made and increased purity is a ticipated. Preliminary runs of the solution calorimeter pproach indicate satisfactory dissolution of lithium an aluminum in 5 N HCl at room temperature.
