REDUCTION AND CONSOLIDATION OF SUPERIOR QUALITY MOLYBDENUM ALLOYS

Abstract

A remote gun for the electron beam melting of molybdenum containing appreciable quantities of volatile impurities was fabricated and will be employed in the melting of calcium-reduced molybdenum. The leaching of calcium-reduced molybdenum in hydrochloric acid removed a large portion of the impurities and appreciably improved the arc melting characteristics. The low level of metallic impurities should be retained, although some interstitial contamination may result. Arcmelted ingots were produced using leached calcium-reduced, hydrogen-reduced, and electron-beammelted starting material and will be fabricated to sheet for evaluation. (Author)
