STEREOKINET PHONOMENA

Abstract

Musatti's article in 1924 might be considered the initial step in the elaboration of Helmholtz's assertion about relative motions. The stereokinetic phenomena demonstrate two facts: it is possible to reach a perfect impression of plasticity and corporality, independently of factors of convergence, divergence, and disparity, on the basis of a purely assimilative mechanism. TheACTION OF SUCH A MECHANISM IS NOT LIMITED TO THE DETERMINATION OF PERSPECTIVE INTERPRETATIONS. It also determines a real perceptual impression of differences in distance, plasticity, and depth. While the perspective impressions are resolved by an understanding of the plastic significance of a figure seen on a plane, the impressions of depth and stereokinetic plasticity produce a real and actual perceptual presence of spatial separation, corporality, or plasticity. The stereokinetic phenomena can be considered as transformations of different aspects of a single object, wherein these aspects may appear as different shapes assumed by that one object, so long as the object, being of constant objective form, is presented in diverse positions. Stereokinetic transformations show that assimilations can explain that change from the meaning of a sign into perceptually present objects, which is considered by Benussi the essential process of suggestive meaning.
