DEVELOPMENT OF BORON PYRALLOY FOR ROCKET MOTOR HARDWARE

Abstract

Measurements are reported for the two Young's moduli and the 3 Poisson's ratios that characterize the elastic behavior of this transversely anisotropic material. Tensile test results signified an expansion in the 'a' direction at right angles to the direction of the applied tensile stress in the 'a' direction; 'c' direction contraction was of almost the same magnitude as the 'a' direction tensile strain. Thermal conductivity in the 'c' direction was measured for one sample of Boron Pyralloy between 188 and 1232 F. The wt% of B content in samples taken from 3 tensile test specimens was 1.22, 1.41 and 0.53 for the tensile strengths (psi) 23,200, 18,970, and 20,300 respectively.
