RESEARCH INVESTIGATION OF MAGNETIC AND ELECTRIC FORCES FOR ROTATING SHAFT SUSPENSION

Abstract

The successful, but limited, operation of an induction motor without mechanical contact is reported. The system uses a radially passive bearing system and an active axial magnetic servo system. The design and construction of the servoed magnets is described along with the servo system. Various noncontacting position sensors are discussed. The work to date on the following types of noncontacting bearing systems is also given: radially active system with permanent magnet armatures; radially active system with laminated iron armature; resonant magnetic bearing system; and resonant electric bearing system.
