THE DYNAMICS OF THE ELASTIC BUCKLING OF CYLINDRICAL SHELLS

Abstract

The buckling behavior of a cylinder axially compressed in a rigid testing machine is tudied. The motion of the lod head is assumed to be slow and essentially uniform. To simulate some possible vibration of the testing machine, a small periodic term was added to the uniform component of the motion. Initial cylinder imperfections, which contibte substantially to the reduction of the bucling strength, were also considered. The present solution explains the familiar phenomenon of the rapid decrease in load and the accompanying vibration in the buckling process. The mited numerical results show that vibration of the machine head probably has no significant effect on the buckling characteristis. (Author)
