MATERIAL-ATTACHMENTS-SOLID LAMINATE RADOMES, EVALUATION OF
Abstract
Specimens to simulate doppler radome construction were prepared. Specimens consisted of glass core and glass reinforced plastic laminate skins with Al or Ti bearing plates (.25 in or 188 in thickness) bonded in place with FM-99 adhesive during fabrication. Specimens were tested at -67, 75 and 300 F after 30 min. and 100 hours at 300 F for ultimate load and bearing stress. Generally the specimens aged 100 hours at 300 F gave higher results than the unaged specimens. The bearing inserts .188 in thick made of Al gave better results than similar inserts made of Ti while .25 in thick Al bearing inserts yielded higher elevated temperature results but lower R.T. and -67 F results than those of Ti. The bearing inserts .25 in thick of both Al and Ti showed higher ultimate loads but lower bearing stresses than the .188 in thick insert specimens. (Author)
