INVESTIGATIONS OF THE OPTICAL DETECTION OF HYPERFINE RESONANCES IN ALKALI HALIDES

Abstract

The matrix elements needed for optical pumping calculations in atomic H are tabulated. Stochastic relaxation matrices assuming randomization of electron spin are given. Stochastic pumping matrices neglecting interference terms are presented. Curves giving the equilibrium ground state populations as a function of the ratio of optical pumping time constant to relaxation time constant were obtained by digital computation using these matrices. Interference terms are important in atomic H since the excited hyperfine splittings are small. An evaluation of these terms for the case of sigma-pumping is presented. An approximate numerical calculation for this case shows that the equilibrium populations are changed only by 5-10%, so the curves given are useful as rough experimental guides. (Author)
