Abstract

Initial T weld were made with a fillet radius or chamfer of .020, using machine settings of 100 kv, 3.5 ma, and 40 ipm. A 2 septum assembly using one piece mandrels was also welded. Extraction of the mandrel proved troublesome as the assembly was mutilated and distorted. Split mandrels were used to accomplish the following series of welded assemblies. The final series of T weld specimens, on 6 in long 4 septum assemblies, required changing the welding parameters established in the initial and second series specimens as heat transfer to the fixture became evident. Motion irregularities of the drives affected the consistency of the welds and overhauling of the drive system was required. The electron gun assembly was removed and polished as arcing was noticed w en welding more than one T in an assembly. (Author)
