INSTRUMENTATION FOR THE OBSERVATION OF FIELD-ALIGNED F REGION IRREGULARITIES AND TRANS-EQUATORIAL RADIO PROPAGATION

Abstract

A brief description is given of the general facilities available at the Field Station and this is followed by a more detailed analysis of certain specialised equipment developed during the present C ONTRACT. The main units discussed are: (1) a 16 Mc/s rotatable backscatter sounder; (2) a 55 Mc/s rotatable backscatter sounder; and (3) a 15-30 Mc/s rotatable back-scatter sounder. Information is also given regarding the methods used to obtain amplitude, pppolarisation, phase-path, and angle-of-arrival measurements of back-scatter echoes, and of scintillation data from satellite radio signals.
