SEISMOMETER ARRAY AND DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM

Abstract

Results of Phase I of AFTAC Project No. VT/077 directed toward the use of large arrays of seismometers in the nuclear surveillance problem are summarized: (1) formulated criteria for judging the performance of arrays; (2) formulated a working model of signal and noise described in f and k space; (3) developed the theoretical techniquesAND REQUIREMENTS FOR OPTIMUM LINEAR ARRAY PROCESSING, AND INVESTIGATED VARIOUS APPROACHES TO ARRAY PROCESSING IN F AND K SPACE IN THE LIGHT OF THE WORKING MODEL O SIGNAL AND NOISE; (4) quantitatively evaluated the performance of arrays with one to thirty-seven elements when various approximations to ideal processing are employed; (5) performed a limited analysis of a small sample of noise and signal data from Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, to bring out practical deviations of the actual case from 2 general working models; (6) outlined specifications for a practical prototype signalprocessing system; and (7) developed a program for the second phase of this work.
