STRENGTH OF SATURATED FAT CLAY

Abstract

TESTS AT SLOW TO MODERATE STRAIN-RATES WITH PORE PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS, PART II, by Robert V. Whitman and Archie M. Richardson, Jr. Results are presented fro two series of undrained triaxial tests upon saturated, remolded specimens, both normally consolidated and heavily overconsolidated, of a fat clay. In the first series, the strain-rate ranged from 1% strain in 5 minutes (t sub 1 = 5 minutes) to t sub 1 = 1.5 milliseconds. In the second series, t sub 1 varied from 1000 minutes to 1 minute, and pore pressures were measured. Both series revealed the importance of internal moisture redistribution in heavily overconsolidated specimens when t sub 1 exceeds about 1 minute. The excess pore pressure was observed to decrease as the rate-ofstrain was increased. The strength increase was on the order of 10% between t sub 1 = 1000 minutes and 5 minutes, another 10% between t sub 1 = 5 minutes and one second, and 50% between 1 second and one millisecond.
