IMAGE OF THE FERMI SURFACE IN LEAD

Abstract

A search was made for the Kohn anomalies in Pb by measuring the thermal diffuse scattering of X-rays. Anomalies were found in accord with the neutron measurements of Brockhouse and coworkers (Brockhouse, B.N., Rao, K. R., and Woods, A.D.B., Phys. Re. Letters 3:93 (1961)). The anomalies are somewhat different from the free electron values. The anomalies only seem to be associated with longitudinal modes of vibration. The measurements were hindered by spurious diffraction peaks arising from an oxide surface or regions of polycrystallinity.
