INVESTIGATION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MAPPING DETAIL AND DATA ENCODING
Abstract
The content of several typical aerial photographs as investigated to design an optimum exact coding scheme for transmission over a radio data li k. Statistical evaluation of the forms of redundancy existing i digitized photos was performed on the basis of the entropy concept of the measure of information. The results of the statistical evaluation were used in the design of exact coding schemes for 3-bit and 5-bit data. Applications of the Huffman coding process were employed for previous value prediction coding and run length coding to combine the advantages of both coding techniques into a final code design. Simulations of the encoding schemes ere performed on all erial photographs to determine the actual compression achieved for 3-bit and 5-bit data. A demonstration and evaluation is presented of the 'isoline scan' method of rectifying near-vertical aerial photographs and test grids. Comparisons are made o the adva g and disadva tage of both encoded digital transmission and the b n idth requirements of ach photo for transmission. (Author)
