RESEARCH ON PROCEDURES FOR THE LOW-TEMPERATURE PRESERVATION OF BLOOD. VI. A BASIC ENGINEERING STUDY OF THE FREEZING AND THAWING PROCESS
Abstract
The fr ezing and hawing of water and blood in closed containers under conditions similar to those currently employed in processing blood is examine . The examination involved (1) the use of transparent containers, as well as containers with removable covers from which the frozen contents could be removed for visual examination; (2) measurement of the relative amounts of liquidAND SOLID AT VARIOUS TI S DURING PROCESSI G; AND (3) the use of thermocouples positioned in the containers. These obs rvations per it a detailed description to be made of the events occurring inside the container during freezing and thawing. This information has guided the development of blood processing equipment and techniques, and is gradually building up a background for subsequent mathematical analysis of the heat transfer problem involved. Some possible modifications to the type of agitation used during freezing are discussed briefly. These modifications, which reduce turbulence in the liquid being cooled, have possible advantages such as simplification of the type of equipment required. (Author)
