FRACTURE CHARACTERISTICS OF STRUCTURAL METALS

Abstract

The feasibility of employing plane strain fracture toughness (K sub IC) as a handbook type param ter to ca egorize the resistance of high trength materials to crack propagation wa determined. The K sub IC values were calculated from a literatur survey on the avail ble notch data for high-strengt materials. The existing data are not sufficient to allow a significant co clusion to be made concerning the applicability of K sub IC as a handbook parameter. A test program was initiated with 4340, H-11, 18% nickel maraging steel and beta titanium to obtain meaningful K sub IC values. The program will involve several heats of each material and will be conducted over a r nge of test temperatures. (Author)
