THE LATERAL MOTION OF A 175MM GUN TUBE PRODUCED BY AN ECCENTRIC PROJECTILE

Abstract

The later l motion of a 175mm gun tube produced by firing a T203E9 HE shell with an effective eccentricity of 0.01 in. was calculated for Zones 1, 2, and 3. The displacement in the point of impact caused by this motion increases steadily with muzzle velocity, ranging from 0.6 mil for Zone 1 to 1.1 mils for Zone 3. Differential effects caused by small variations in the muzzle velocity were calculate for Zone 2. This later l motion is not the cause of the abnormal dispersion that had been observed when firing Zone 1 charges. The changes in the point of impact caused by throw-off and aerodynamic jump were also calculated. The total changes in the point of impact due to these causes and the motion of the tube ranges from 1.1 mils for Zone 1 to 1.7 mils for Zone 3. (Author)
