THE DEVELOPMENT OF GAS LUBRICATED BEARINGS FOR USF IN BLOWER MOTORS

Abstract

Work is well along on formulating a gas bearing design manual, to be used for the design of gaslubricated, self acting journal and thrust bearings for blower motors in the range from 10 to 500 cfm. A t st rig was developed to verify the theoretical design curves with experimental data. Design of a gas lubricated blower motor in the 20 cfm range is proceeding using a 29 frame size motor (1-13/16 in O.D ). he bearing to be utilized in this design will be a 3/8 in. bore by 1-1/4 in. long self acting unit type bearing. Bearing materials for use in the motor are being reviewed with respect to their ability to withstand solid contact during starts and stops. (Author)
